Devi embodies all that is pure in thought and action. She lives in a lower-middle class family with her brother Dasu, her sister Easwari and her old mother.

Dasu is uneducated and is a car mechanic by profession. He is 35-years-old unmarried and frustrated with his life.

Their sister Easwari is mentally challenged and has to be chained at home at all times. The onus of the family and educating Devi is on Dasu as their mother wants Devi to study and get a job to earn for the family.   

After Devi finishes college, she applies for interviews but has to keep asking money from Dasu for application forms. Dasu hates it as inspite of spending Rs 100 every time Devi does not get a job.

The old mother is caught between her son and Devi. Devi's hopes that she will be free of all her brother's taunts once she gets a job.
